Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before you buy your first travel eSIM.
Getting started
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a carrier profile by scanning a QR code. You can store multiple eSIM profiles on one phone and switch between them instantly in Settings.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
On iPhone: go to Settings → General → About and scroll down to look for 'Digital SIM' or 'Available SIM'. On Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → tap 'Add eSIM'. On Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap '+'. Most phones from 2020 onwards support eSIM.
Does my phone need to be unlocked?
Yes. If your phone was purchased on a contract with a UK network (e.g. EE, O2, Vodafone, Three), it may be carrier-locked. Contact your network to unlock it — most will do this for free once your contract is complete. You can still use your home SIM alongside a travel eSIM once unlocked.
How long does installation take?
Buying and installing a LimitFlex eSIM typically takes less than five minutes. After purchase you receive a QR code by email within seconds. Scanning it and completing installation on your phone takes about two minutes on a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Plans and coverage
How many countries does LimitFlex cover?
LimitFlex eSIMs cover 190+ countries and territories worldwide. You can browse all destinations on our destinations page. Regional plans are also available, covering Europe (30+ countries), Asia, the Americas, and more on a single plan.
What data speeds can I expect?
LimitFlex eSIMs connect to local carrier networks including 4G LTE and 5G where available. Speeds depend on the local network infrastructure and your location. In cities and tourist areas across Europe, Asia, and North America, 4G LTE speeds are typical. Speeds in rural areas may be slower.
Are there unlimited data plans?
Yes. LimitFlex offers unlimited data plans for many destinations. Unlimited plans are ideal for digital nomads, remote workers, or anyone who relies heavily on data. Browse plans by destination on the store to see what is available for your trip.
Can I use the same eSIM in multiple countries?
Regional eSIM plans cover multiple countries on a single plan. For example, a Europe eSIM works across 30+ countries without any need to switch. For destinations outside a regional plan's coverage, you may need a separate local eSIM, or choose a global plan.
What happens when my data runs out?
Your eSIM will stop providing data once the allowance is used. You can purchase a top-up or a new plan at any time. You will never receive an unexpected bill or overage charge.
Installation and setup
When should I install the eSIM?
Install the eSIM at home before your trip, using your home Wi-Fi. Keep it toggled off (but installed) until you arrive at your destination. This way it activates automatically when your plane lands.
Can I install the eSIM without Wi-Fi?
You need a data or Wi-Fi connection to download and install the eSIM profile. We strongly recommend doing this at home on Wi-Fi before you travel, not at the airport where connectivity can be unreliable.
Can I use my home SIM at the same time?
Yes. Most modern smartphones support dual-SIM: one physical SIM and one eSIM. Set your home SIM as the primary line for calls and texts, and use the LimitFlex eSIM as your data line abroad. You will keep your home number active for incoming calls while using affordable local data.
What if the QR code does not scan?
Try the following: ensure you are in a well-lit area, hold the camera steady, and wait for it to focus. If scanning still fails, most eSIM providers also offer a manual activation code you can enter directly in Settings. Contact our support team if you continue to have problems.
Calls, texts, and apps
Can I make phone calls with a travel eSIM?
LimitFlex travel eSIMs are data-only plans, which is all most travellers need. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, and Google Meet all work perfectly over your data connection. For traditional calls to local numbers, keep your home SIM active alongside the eSIM.
Will WhatsApp and iMessage work?
Yes. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, and all other internet-based messaging apps work normally over your eSIM data. Your home phone number stays active on your physical SIM so contacts can still reach you.
Does Google Maps work with a travel eSIM?
Yes. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Citymapper, and all navigation apps work perfectly over an eSIM data connection. We recommend downloading offline maps for your destination before you fly, as a backup for areas with poor signal.
Pricing and payment
Are there any hidden fees?
No. The price displayed is the price you pay. There are no roaming surcharges, no overage fees, and no monthly contracts. Data is capped at your purchased allowance — you will never receive a surprise bill.
What payment methods do you accept?
LimitFlex accepts all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal. Payments are processed securely.
Can I get a refund?
If your eSIM has not been scanned or activated, you can request a full refund. Once an eSIM has been installed and activated on a device, it cannot be refunded as the data is accessible. Contact our support team with any questions.
