How to Install eSIM on iPhone
Installing an eSIM on iPhone is quick and straightforward. The whole process takes about two minutes if you're connected to Wi-Fi. Here's exactly how to do it.
Before you start — checklist
- Your iPhone must be eSIM compatible (iPhone XS/XR or newer)
- Your phone must not be carrier locked
- You need a stable Wi-Fi connection
- You should have received a QR code from your eSIM provider
Step 1 — Open Settings
Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions). Tap 'Add eSIM' or 'Add Data Plan'.
Step 2 — Scan the QR code
Point your camera at the QR code from your eSIM provider. Your phone will automatically detect it and prompt you to continue. Alternatively, tap 'Enter Details Manually' if you have an activation code.
Step 3 — Label and set as secondary
Give your eSIM a name (e.g. 'Travel Data'). When prompted, set your home SIM as 'Primary' for calls/SMS and the new eSIM as 'Secondary' for data. This lets you keep your home number active for calls while using the travel eSIM for internet.
Step 4 — Turn on data roaming
Go to Settings → Cellular → select your travel eSIM → turn on Data Roaming. This is required for it to connect to networks abroad.
Step 5 — Don't activate until you land
Leave your travel eSIM toggled off until you arrive at your destination. It will only consume data once it connects to a foreign network — but activating it early uses no data.
