How to Transfer eSIM to a New Phone

James Okafor ·

Transferring an eSIM to a new phone isn't the same as moving a physical SIM card — you can't simply pop it out and put it in. The process depends on your provider and your phone model, but it's generally straightforward if you know what to expect.

Can you transfer an eSIM directly?

It depends on the provider. Some eSIM plans are single-use: once installed on a device, they cannot be transferred. Others allow you to re-download your profile to a new device by contacting the provider or using their app. Always check your provider's transfer policy before you upgrade your phone.

Transferring eSIM between iPhones

Apple introduced eSIM transfer in iOS 16. When setting up a new iPhone, you can transfer your eSIM directly from your old iPhone without needing to contact your carrier. Both phones need to be running iOS 16 or later, and they need to be placed near each other during setup. This works for carrier eSIMs — travel eSIMs may still require a fresh QR code from your provider.

Transferring eSIM on Android

Android eSIM transfer is less standardised. Samsung devices support transfer between some models, but it requires going through the carrier's app in most cases. Google Pixel phones on supported carriers can transfer via the Quick Switch Adapter setup process. In many cases, the easiest solution is to simply re-download your eSIM profile using a new QR code from your provider.

Travel eSIM providers: re-download policies

  • Most reputable travel eSIM providers allow one re-download per purchase if the original device is reset or lost
  • Contact your provider's support before your trip if you're upgrading phones
  • Keep your original QR code email — some providers let you re-scan within a validity window
  • If your plan has already been activated, ask the provider for a new installation code

Best practice before upgrading phones

Before you factory reset or trade in your old device, note down your active eSIM plan details and contact your provider to confirm what your transfer options are. Once a device is wiped, the eSIM profile on it is gone — but most travel providers can issue a replacement if you have your original order confirmation.
