How to Get Around Vietnam: Transport Guide for Tourists

Priya Sharma ·

Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km from north to south, and getting between its highlights — Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City — requires a bit of planning. The good news: transport is cheap, reliable, and in many cases genuinely enjoyable.

Trains: the best long-distance option

The Reunification Express train runs the entire length of Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. It's scenic, comfortable on the right carriages (book a 4-berth soft sleeper for overnight trips), and far more relaxing than the equivalent bus. Hanoi to Hue takes around 13 hours overnight; Hue to Da Nang is just 2.5 hours through spectacular coastal scenery.

Buses: budget-friendly between cities

Open-tour 'sleeper buses' connect all major cities and are the cheapest inter-city option. They're not luxurious, but they work. Book with reputable companies like Phuong Trang (FUTA) or The Sinh Tourist. For short hops, local buses are very cheap but can be confusing to navigate without Vietnamese.

Getting around cities

  • Grab (the Southeast Asian Uber equivalent) — use this in every city for consistent, fair pricing
  • Xe om (motorbike taxis) — negotiate before getting on
  • Cyclos in Hoi An old town — tourist-oriented but enjoyable for sightseeing
  • Walking in compact areas like Hoi An ancient town and Hanoi old quarter

Motorbike hire for the adventurous

Renting a motorbike is how many backpackers cover stretches like the Hai Van Pass or the northern mountain routes near Sapa. It's thrilling, cheap, and gives total freedom — but traffic in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is intense. If you're comfortable on a scooter, the quieter central and northern routes are genuinely spectacular.

Why you need mobile data in Vietnam

Navigation is essential everywhere in Vietnam. Grab requires a data connection, Google Maps covers the country well, and live translation (for menus and signs) is useful daily. A Vietnam eSIM installed before you fly means you're navigating from the moment you exit arrivals at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat.
