eSIM for Senior Travellers: Simple Setup Guide
Travel eSIMs have a reputation for being complicated, but they are genuinely no harder to set up than connecting to a new Wi-Fi network. If you can scan a QR code on your phone, you can install an eSIM. This guide walks you through exactly what to do, step by step, without any jargon.
What you need before you start
- An eSIM-compatible phone (iPhone XS or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer)
- A Wi-Fi connection at home -- you will install the eSIM before you travel
- Your email address, which you use to receive the QR code after purchase
- About five minutes -- the whole process from purchase to installation takes under five minutes
Step 1: Check your phone is compatible
On an iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About. Scroll down and look for 'Available SIM' or 'Digital SIM' listed. If you see it, your phone supports eSIM. If you are unsure, our compatible devices list shows every model that works.
Step 2: Choose your destination and buy a plan
Visit the LimitFlex store and search for your destination country. Choose how many days you will be travelling and a data allowance that suits you. For most two-week holidays, 10-15 GB is comfortable. Complete the purchase -- you will receive a QR code to the email address you provide.
Browse eSIM Plans
Buy before you travel. Get connected instantly on arrival. No physical SIM required.

Open Settings on your iPhone and tap 'Cellular' (or 'Mobile Data' on some UK phones). Tap 'Add eSIM' or 'Add Data Plan'. Your camera will open -- point it at the QR code in your email. Your phone will say 'Cellular Plan Detected' -- tap Continue, then tap Add Cellular Plan. That is it.
Step 4: Set it up ready for your trip
Give the eSIM a name you will recognise, like 'Holiday Data'. Under Cellular, set your home SIM as 'Primary' so your regular phone number stays active for calls. Set the new eSIM as 'Secondary' for data. You do not need to turn it on until you land -- leave it installed but inactive.
Step 5: On arrival
When your plane lands, open Settings and switch on your travel eSIM. Within a minute or two, your phone will find a local network and connect. Your maps, messages, and calls over the internet (WhatsApp, FaceTime) will all work. You will not need to do anything else.
What if something goes wrong?
If the eSIM is not connecting, the most common fix is simply turning Data Roaming on. Go to Settings → Cellular → select your travel eSIM → turn on Data Roaming. If that does not help, try turning the phone off and on. Our support page has step-by-step help for any issue that comes up.
Frequently asked questions
Is an eSIM secure for older phones? eSIM technology is as secure as a regular SIM card and does not slow your phone down or change anything else. Your regular phone number and all your apps continue to work exactly as normal.
