Do British Citizens Need a Visa for Japan? Travel Entry Requirements
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Japan for tourism or short-term business. Under Japan's visa exemption scheme, UK passport holders are granted up to 90 days in Japan without needing to apply for any visa in advance.
What you need at the border
- A valid British passport (must be valid for the duration of your stay)
- A return or onward flight ticket
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (rarely checked, but carry a bank card)
- An accommodation address for your first night (a hotel booking confirmation is fine)
The 90-day rule explained
The 90-day allowance is per visit, not per year. If you leave Japan and re-enter, the 90-day clock resets — though Japanese immigration officers have discretion to question travellers who appear to be living in Japan on tourist entries. Digital nomads staying long-term should look into the Japan Digital Nomad Visa, introduced in 2024.
Arriving in Japan: what to expect
At the airport, you'll pass through immigration where an officer will scan your passport and fingerprints. Japan introduced the Visit Japan Web system for online pre-registration — completing this before you fly speeds up arrival significantly. You'll be issued an entry stamp valid for your 90-day stay.
Can you extend your stay beyond 90 days?
You cannot extend a tourist entry beyond 90 days in Japan. If you need more time, you must leave the country and re-enter. Some travellers do a 'visa run' to South Korea or Taiwan, but Japanese immigration is aware of this practice and repeated short re-entries may attract scrutiny.
Staying connected in Japan
Japan has excellent mobile coverage including widespread 5G in cities and strong 4G on bullet train routes. A Japan travel eSIM is the most convenient way to get data — install it at home and you'll be connected from the moment you land at Narita or Haneda.
