7 Days in Japan: The Ultimate First-Timer's Itinerary
Seven days is enough time to experience the core of Japan without rushing. This itinerary balances Tokyo's modern energy with Kyoto's historic temples, with a Nara day trip and optional Osaka night in between.
Days 1–3: Tokyo
Fly into Narita or Haneda and head to your Tokyo hotel. Day 1: recover from the flight, explore your neighbourhood (Shinjuku or Shibuya are great bases), and grab dinner at a ramen shop. Day 2: Meiji Shrine and Harajuku in the morning, Shibuya crossing and department stores in the afternoon. Day 3: Asakusa and Senso-ji temple, then the Tokyo Skytree or teamLab digital art museum.
Day 4: Shinkansen to Kyoto
Take an early Nozomi shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto — the journey takes around 2 hours 15 minutes on the fastest services. Arrive by late morning and check in. Afternoon: Fushimi Inari and its thousands of torii gates (go early or late to avoid crowds). Evening: stroll through Gion district and spot geiko or maiko if lucky.
Days 5–6: Kyoto and Nara
- Arashiyama bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji garden (day 5 morning)
- Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) — book timed entry in advance
- Day 6: day trip to Nara to see the freely roaming deer at Todai-ji
- Return to Kyoto or continue to Osaka for your last night
Day 7: Osaka or Fly Home
If you're flying from Kansai International Airport (KIX), a night in Osaka makes the early morning flight much easier. Dotonbori is the place to eat takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and street food. If flying from Tokyo, catch an early shinkansen back and enjoy one final dinner in the capital.
